Students returned to school at Fort Lewis College in gorgeous Durango, Colorado on Monday, September 1st. In less than a week Fort Lax will begin practice in preparation for their quest for an elusive RMLC DII championship, and a return to the MCLA National Championships. Entering Daniel Riecks’ 4th season as head coach, the team appears poised for big things, but some changes loom in the national and conference picture. The MCLA changed its rules this summer, allowing conferences to determine which division level teams will compete at, so long time DI members Utah State and the University of New Mexico enter the DII hunt.
The team graduated only one senior, so the competition should be fierce for incoming freshmen and returners alike for every starting position. The team will not be short on leadership, as team captains Tim Topper (Sr.), Brooks Wilcox (Jr.), and Shaun Koenig (Sr.) all return. Koenig and Max Segal (Jr.) earned high honors last season as Academic All-Americans, while Koenig landed on the 2nd Team for All-Americans, with Segal earning honorable mention.
Practice begins Monday, September 8th at 5:30pm at the Durango Fairgrounds. All interested players should attend and stay for a brief informational meeting afterwards. Practice will be held at the same time and location throughout the fall on Mondays and Wednesdays, 5:30-Dark, and players should attend morning lifting at the Student Life Center at 7am Monday-Friday beginning Wednesday, September 10th.
