Hawks Finish Season with Style

Hawks cap first winning season since 2016 with win over Western State

DURANGO – Cullen Robinette broke the program scoring record and goals in a game record and the Skyhawks sent off senior Karl Schenck with two wins to close out his college career.

Not to be overshadowed, Karl’s 12 goals and 11 assists were nothing to sneeze at in their own regard, as the Hawks defeated New Mexico 21-11 Friday and Western State 27-1 on Sunday.

“We have some really good players at attack and this line will go down as one of the best to ever suit up for FLC”, said Coach Mudrak referring to the attack line of Cullen Robinette, Karl Schenck, and Jasper Iaconis. “What they did this year was elite and I hope the awards committee recognizes that when all-conference awards come out.”

The Skyhawks finish the season 7-6 with five of those loses coming by less than 5 goals, including one goal defeats to Metro, Mines, and DU. On the other end, the Skyhawks average margin of victory in 2023 was 17 goals, with the high mark for the season coming in a 29 goal effort against South Utah.

On the year, Cullen Robinette finished the season as the team’s leading scorer with 100 points even on 58 goals and 42 assists. Karl Schenck followed that up with 42 goals and 41 assists on 83 points. Freshman Jasper Iaconis came up third with 41 goals to go with 12 assists in his first campaign for the Fort.

The Hawks look to return most of their starters from the past season and hope to see continued growth from start freshmen players like Trent Jacobson, who was a sensation at LSM finishing with 9 goals. Other freshmen who starred this year include Nolan Miner who finished 60% at the faceoff X, which included 80%+ win percentages in seven contests.

On the defensive end, Parker Sanchez was named defensive MVP of the season by coaches for his efforts in net. In his first year ever playing goalie, he proved to be one of the team’s strengths, including double digit saves in five games this year, highlighted by 20 against NAU in a 10-5 losing effort.

“We’re excited about the momentum in the program right now. Just three years ago we had 9-11 guys showing up and were winless for a while. This group has carried this program to a very good place.” Coach Mudrak concluded. “Don’t sleep on Fort Lewis, we’ve got some hungry kids ready to take the next step in 2024.”

Thank you Skyhawk nation for all your support this year!
