Furious comeback falls just short as Skyhawks drop to 2-2
GOLDEN- Fort Lewis dropped a tough one to Colorado School of Mines Saturday, falling 15-14 in overtime.
Similar to last year where the Orediggers jumped out to an 8-0 lead, Fort Lewis dug themselves a deep hole to start the game, falling behind 7-1 after the first quarter. Poor individual defense gave Mines a number of close looks on the crease, ending in goals for the home team.
And as was the case last year, the game shifted in FLC’s direction the last three quarters. It started with a flurry of FLC goals in the second quarter, started by junior Ian Crandall who found an opening in the middle of the Mines defense to close the gap, followed soon after by goals by Jasper Iaconis, Cullen Robinette, and Ethan Carmona who scored his first goal of his career on a contested catch and shot on the crease. FLC would score five in the second frame to bring the score to 10-6 at half.
The offensive onslaught continued in the third with junior Cullen Robinette taking over the game and notching four goals in the quarter, two of which were assisted by fellow Colorado native Braden Lindsey. Jasper Iaconis found the net as well to secure his fourth hat trick in four tries at the college level.
The fourth quarter began with Mines clinging to a one goal lead, that would soon vanish as FLC tied the game on a goal from senior Karl Schenck and followed up by a goal by Sonny Bannon to take the lead. After Mines scored on a busted sub by FLC, Ethan Carmona followed up his first goal with another tight finish to give FLC the lead again, all looked good after a stop by FLC with under a minute to go, however, a turnover on the clear ended up costing the Hawks as Mines picked up a dropped pass and scored to send the game to overtime, where Mines was able to capitalize on a Skyhawks defender losing his footing, allowing the dodger to send Mines home with the win, beating Parker Sanchez stick side low.
“The little mistakes killed us,” lamented O Coordinator Robbie Fields, “we can’t shoot ourselves in the foot like that in the first quarter. It’s just not good lacrosse.”
FLC will be on the road again this week with games Sunday and Monday in California against Biola and Cal State Fullerton.
