Big second quarter spurs road victory
The Fort Lewis College Skyhawks opened the lacrosse season Sunday, winning on the road against the University of New Mexico 18-8.
Freshman Jasper Iaconis led the way with 4 goals in his Skyhawk debut. That stat line was followed closely by seniors Cullen Robinette and Karl Schenck who finished with 3 goals and 4 assists each.
Fort Lewis took the opening possession off a faceoff win by freshman Nolan Miner, the first of his 23 faceoff wins on Sunday, but a save UNM goalie Daniel Huntley led to a clear and possession for the Lobos. That effort was quickly stopped by the Hawks D though who proceeded to clear the ball, leading to junior midfielder Ian Crandall finding the back of the net to break the opening draw.
Fort Lewis would go on to score four more in the first quarter to bring it to 5-0 after the first, and added nine goals in the second, to take a commanding 14-2 lead into half. Sophomore Parker Sanchez, who started in net, came up with four saves in his first start at goalie, and was named player of the game.
“This is about the players, our guys consistently won their matchups today and it led to the result you saw on the field.” Coach Tom Mudrak said, “We had a lot of really talented freshmen come in this year and we saw that come through immediately, it is going to be exciting to see them development this year.”
Sophomore Caley Little played goalie for the Hawks in the second half, making three saves on 9 shots, including a big save in close on former Skyhawk Jack Britt.
Some poles had big games for Fort Lewis, including LSM’s Trent Jacobson and Mahlon Mitzel, who each scored their first goals as Skyhawks, with Mitzel putting his second shot away after getting stuffed on his first attempt. Sophomore Erik Selfridge had a strong game on the defensive end along with junior Jack Schrimsher who anchored the defense as usual.
Fort Lewis has a few weeks off before travelling to Holbrook, Arizona to play neutral site games at Roadrunner Stadium against Southern Utah and Northern Arizona University March 4-5.
