Skyhawks Prepare for Opening Weekend

DURANGO, CO – With less than two weeks before the Skyhawks head north to start the 2018 season, the anticipation is starting to build around the sleepy campus overlooking Durango.

The Skyhawks will mark spring break with the annual road trip. This year’s campaign starts with a scrimmage against Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. After a travel day, the Skyhawks will begin a doubleheader against the #12 University of Montana on Friday night and #13 Montana State University Saturday afternoon.

The Grizzlies from Montana have started the season undefeated, including a 12-6 win over the Mexican National Team in a preseason scrimmage. Meanwhile, the Bobcats of Montana State are poised for another strong season under Head Coach Chris Kelley.

Head Coach Tom Mudrak is excited at the prospect of getting the season started. “We’ve been working in the gym for the past two months, I think everyone is ready to get on the field and face competition wearing a different colored uniform.”

The Skyhawks return key starters in Scott Dimmitt and Jacob Branch Boyle on offense, however, the graduation of seven starters from last season’s team will certainly present many challenges for a young Skyhawks team.

“We’re going to be counting on a lot of freshmen to step in and contribute right away.” Mudrak said, “But we have some really good freshmen, and they are chomping at the bit for the opportunity to prove themselves. I’m excited to see them play, especially against  teams the caliber of Montana and MSU.”

The Skyhawks will faceoff against the Weber State Wildcats on Wednesday March 7 at 7pm at the Spence Eccles Ogden Community Sports Complex.
