Unseasonably warm 60+ degree weather greeted the Fort as the rolled over Wolf Creek pass to challenge the Adams State Grizzlies in a preseason scrimmage today. Fort Lax was outmatched by their NCAA Division 2 varsity opponents, falling 18-5 to the Grizzlies. The Skyhawks were led on offense by So. Conor Henricks 3 goals, Jr. Max Segal added 1, and Fr. Dakota Andre scored his first career goal with a laser to the corner on the run. On defense, So. goalie Hayden Pike made 12 saves, most of them spectacular, and helped the team go 14 of 18 on clears with precision passes.
The Skyhawks held their own and showed flashes of brilliance despite the rust of three months of gym tan lacrosse. A rise in elevation to 7,544 feet could have also been a factor in the tired legs, but it is too early in the season to make excuses. Losing 22 of 28 faceoffs will hurt a team’s chances no matter the level of competition. The Skyhawks play another scrimmage against newly minted NCAA D2 varsity opponent the CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves tomorrow in the tropical heat of Pueblo. Hopefully the Fort will start to heat up as well. Global warming is real, and so is the 2015 season for Fort Lax. It should be a fun ride!
