The Skyhawks came from five down to win 11-10

DENVER – Things were looking grim on the Fort Lewis bench as the clock ticked to the 10 minute mark of the fourth quarter. Down 10-5 at the time, it appeared as though the Skyhawks were going to drop another game in RMLC action. Then things took a turn.

Defenseman McV Lapointe picked up a ground ball, carried it down, and threw a pass over the entire defense and attackman Ian Bragdon. On the other side, sophomore Scott Dimmitt was waiting for the pass uncovered. The attackman made the catch and put it top shelf. The come back was on.

Jacob Boyle proceeded to win the next face-off before the Hawks put another one in and suddenly things started to feel different.

On the next possession, defensive midfielder River Hoaglin made the biggest play of his season, intercepting a pass and carrying it down before feeding Ian Bragdon for a fast break goal. The sideline erupted.

Finally tied up after 10 minutes of scratching back into the game, Boyle was able to secure another face-off before Ian Bragdon, who was benched earlier in the game, dodged across the middle and buried it in the back of the net to give the Skyhawks the lead for good.

“That was fun.” Said Head coach Tom Mudrak. “This one is on our players. We were not making smart decisions in the first three quarters, playing rather lackadaisically.  But in that 4th quarter, we turned it on and never quit.”

Three defensive players provided assists in the final quarter. A rare occurrence which proved to be the sparks that launched this team from playing flat to believing they could win.

CU-Denver had one last chance to tie the game when Beau Ecksten, who scored five on the day, came streaking down the middle and firing a shot, however, senior goaltender Hayden Pike stood tall, collecting his 17th save of the day and sealing the victory for the Skyhawks.

With the win, the Skyhawks improved to 4-4 on the season. They finished the season 3-0 in Denver, also defeating Colorado School of Mines and Johnson & Wales University earlier in the year.

The Skyhawks have one more regular season game, senior day at the Fort, Saturday April 15th at 11 am against the 14th ranked North Arizona University Lumberjacks.
